Yakima Herald-Republic Local News, Sports - Safe kids -- Keep kids safe while camping

So you're gonna go camping! Good for you! Every summer, wonderful childhood memories are made, sitting around campfires, roasting marshmallows to perfection and singing silly songs. No wonder so many families pack up the tent and head off to "rough it" in the wilderness.

I have friends that warn against it. "There are no "real" toilets!" they exclaim. "And the bugs! Ugh! And doesn't the water have that "Geraldo" virus in it?!"

"It's giardia," I explain. "You bring your own water from home. Camping is great!" I insist. I can't help but roll my eyes at all the fun they'll be missing by staying home.

Unfortunately, every year a few childhood tragedies do occur up in the hills and mountains. Even if the intent of a family camping trip is for Mom and Dad to relax, catch a few fish and let the kids have some outdoor fun, it's still our job to pay close attention to our children's safety and whereabouts. Hazards are out there, but taking simple safety precautions can help ensure a safe and memorable trip.
